Members of the British Parliament received gifts from representatives of the Qatari authorities.


The government of Qatar spent ?251, 208 on gifts to British MPs between October 2021 and October 2022, The Guardian writes, citing an analysis by the Observer. We are talking, in particular, about paying for accommodation in luxury hotels, business class flights and tickets to horse races.


The value of gifts from Qatar over the past year is more than the total amount spent by 15 other countries whose governments gave gifts to British MPs.


Over the previous five years, gifts from Qatar were declared totaling about 100 thousand pounds - and only in the year leading up to the World Cup, the country spent twice as much on these purposes.


It is noted that some members of parliament who received gifts from Qatar subsequently spoke favorably about the upcoming World Cup in debates and tried to divert attention from the problems existing in the host country of the tournament.


The second place in spending on gifts to British MPs was taken by the United Arab Emirates, which spent 37, 661 pounds for this purpose. Thus, Qatar`s spending is 6 times higher.
