Xavi was offended by Barcelona because of the memes about him and the lawn. The capital of Catalonia is hosting the Mobile World Congress (MWC), an annual technology exhibition, from March 3 to 6.
Blaugrana president Joan Laporta and goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen visited the exhibition facilities and performed on stage. And the Barcelona Innovation Center held a series of presentations on Tuesday focusing on future technologies in sports.
General attention was attracted by the presentation of the German startup Turfcoach, which allows you to monitor the condition of the field in real time. Turfcoach was one of five finalists bidding to supply the pitch for the redeveloped Camp Nou stadium, Barca sources said. The company`s founder and CEO Christian Theil was one of the speakers on Tuesday.
During the presentation, Turfcoach showed a slide with two memes about ex-footballer and former Barcelona head coach Xavi. One of them showed Xavi with grass instead of hair, and the second showed him working with a lawnmower on the Camp Nou pitch.
Note that Xavi, as a coach, repeatedly complained about the unsatisfactory condition of the fields in Spain, which prevented his team from showing beautiful football and achieving results. For this, he even received the nickname "gardener" from rival fans.
Memes quickly spread on social networks. Xavi`s circle told The Athletic that the former Barca coach and his family were shocked and disappointed by the footage. They felt it was disrespectful to the legend, all the more painful because it happened at an event organized by the club itself.
Barcelona apologized to Xavi and denied that the club had any commercial agreements with Turfcoach.
